Rice Triptych - BEFORE AND AFTER

People often ask, “what’s your medium?”. I usually say photography-based mixed media which leads to more questions that I find hard to answer. Like many artists, I have explored a variety of mediums. My earliest days as a serious artist were defined by traditional black and white film photography. Around 1999 I tentatively moved into digital photography. Since then my work has evolved in many ways, but almost always still begins with a photograph.

Here is the the "Before" and "After" of a piece done this week. The first image is the original photograph made in Bali of bags of rice in a warehouse. I used this as reference to create a digital painting. After that I worked with the colors and added layers and textures. Finally, I decided to break it apart as a triptych.
